Client:
The Morchand Center for Clinical Competence. Exciting, exacting, and extraordinary - The Morchand Center is dedicated to training today's medical students to become tomorrow's compassionate physicians. By using the latest technology, the Center teaches students to communicate with patients in the thoughtful and sensitive manner necessary for a successful doctor-patient relationship. Their eight encounter room clinical competence center is in the heart of New York City. A prototype in the field of medical education, the Center is available as a resource for all metropolitan area medical schools. A consortium has been formed for all schools that wish to utilize this method of training and assessment of their students.
Needs Assessment:
When the busiest clinical competence facility in the United States asked our development team to design and build a robust clinical competence system that is as flexible as their schedule and workflow would be, we saw it as a great challenge. Our MSETG team would spend the next 24 months in an extensive research and development mode, assessing not only the Morchand Center's needs, but also establishing a critical feature list based on input from facilities from around the country. We knew that the Morchand Center's current needs were different than most (multiple institutions run their programs from the MC), requiring us to develop a very flexible scheduling system - we also know that the Morchand Center's needs would expand in the years to come, driving us to develop portable/ field systems for Bio-Terrorism training, flexible SP scheduling to accommodate family training scenarios and a software interface that could be expanded and updated as the facility demands. We were also called upon to rebuild the entire control room/ faculty observation room and re-wire the entire facility. The Morchand Center also asked our team to consult with them on facility workflow and ergonomic design options.
Facility Solution:
The Mount Sinai Educational Technology team took the challenge and developed DIGITALsp and DIGITALspv. These two modules respectively manage the data acquisition, scheduling, reporting and master video control system. Comprehensive and robust, our system incorporates the digitization of all evaluation and scoring functions in addition to video and audio capture, archiving and distribution, all using a secure web based interface with daily data backup and redundant storage facilities for all assets. We rebuilt the Morchand Center 's infrastructure, partnered with Mount Sinai 's IT department for access and security and installed the first DIGITALsp system in a flawless manor. Below are some features of the Morchand Center 's installation.
